Leosmak Builds Europe’s #1 Freeze Dryer with Golioth
Freeze dryers have long drying cycles and manually checking the process is often inconvenient. Customers of Leosmak wanted mobile notifications, remote monitoring, and data visualization that required IoT infrastructure that was too resource intensive to build from scratch.
Golioth offered the exact infrastructure required to build the custom experience that Leosmak customers were demanding including remove updates, real-time monitoring, and the ability to leverage data from devices to deliver analytics and diagnostic services.
A single senior firmware engineer was able to implement the entire project using ESP32 with FreeRTOS, a custom mobile application and Golioth's scalable architecture. This implementation saved Leosmak millions of Euros and enabled them to become the #1 freeze dryer product in Europe.
Leosmak, led by CTO and co-founder Oleg Nadorozniak, has revolutionized the freeze-drying market in Europe. The company manufactures industrial and consumer-grade freeze-drying machines, catering to diverse clients ranging from restaurants to research institutions. By integrating IoT capabilities with Golioth’s platform, Leosmak has developed a connected ecosystem of freeze dryers, offering customers unprecedented control, efficiency, and innovation.
Initially, Leosmak’s journey into the freeze-drying business was marked by challenges. Industrial freeze dryers were hard to source in Europe, with existing manufacturers offering expensive and low-quality equipment. Despite this, Oleg and his team built their first prototype and launched a product line, quickly becoming the leader in the European market.
As demand grew, the team faced new technical challenges. Freeze-drying cycles are long—often 30 to 40 hours—making it inconvenient for customers to monitor the process manually. Additionally, clients in research and food industries required detailed data analytics, historical logs, and remote diagnostics. Oleg explains:
“The nature of freeze-drying is such that you need to monitor every phase of the process. Customers wanted mobile notifications, remote monitoring, and data visualization. For us, remote software updates and diagnostics were critical to stay ahead of competitors.”
However, as a self-funded startup, Leosmak lacked the resources to build an extensive IoT system from scratch. Oleg estimated that such an undertaking would require a large team and millions of dollars in investment. “It was simply out of reach,” he said.
While researching alternatives, Oleg discovered Golioth through instructional YouTube videos. Impressed by its capabilities, he decided to explore its potential for Leosmak. “Golioth helped magic happen with only one software developer,” Oleg said. “We could build an IoT ecosystem that saved millions in development costs.”
Using Golioth’s universal IoT platform, Leosmak implemented remote updates, real-time monitoring, plus analytics and diagnostic services. “Remote updates were the primary feature we wanted because our market spans all of Europe. Physically updating devices isn’t feasible.” With real-time monitoring Leosmak could stream data via LightDB to their own servers, allowing users to monitor drying cycles remotely with a mobile app or generate reports for analysis. Oleg explains, “Customers can track multiple freeze dryers from anywhere, receiving push notifications when cycles are complete or if issues arise. And universities conducting food research rely on our machines to analyze and optimize processes. The ability to generate and access reports is crucial.”
Leosmak’s integration with Golioth was swift and efficient. A single senior firmware developer handled the project, leveraging Golioth’s libraries and manuals to create a seamless IoT solution.
Key components included:
- ESP32 with FreeRTOS: Embedded in Leosmak’s devices, this microcontroller communicates with Golioth’s platform over WiFi.
- Custom Mobile Application: Developed in-house, the app receives data from Golioth that allows users to monitor and control devices, view historical data, and receive notifications.
- Scalable Architecture: Golioth’s platform supported industrial models and smaller consumer devices, ensuring flexibility across product lines.
Oleg described the experience: “The Golioth library was amazing. It took only a few weeks to integrate everything and start testing. Having a universal IoT platform meant we didn’t need specialized knowledge or a large team.”
The Results
By leveraging Golioth’s IoT infrastructure, Leosmak achieved:
- Market Leadership: Leosmak is now the top freeze-dryer manufacturer in Europe, with no close competitors.some text
- “The IoT functionality enabled by Golioth is our key differentiator. No other company offers this level of connectivity.”

Conclusion
Integrating Golioth’s IoT platform has been transformative for Leosmak, enabling the company to lead the European freeze-drying market while maintaining a lean operational model.
“Golioth’s all-in-one solution unleashes creativity and innovation,” Oleg reflected. “It’s hard to imagine achieving this without their platform. With Golioth, we’re poised to explore new markets and continue developing groundbreaking technologies.”
